Millies Place Etsy Shop Bakery Review

Millies Place Lemon Glazed Shortbread Cookies
Have a party coming up or need a Christmas gift idea?  I recently had the opportunity to sample some baked goods from Millies Place on Etsy.com.  Millies Place is owned by the sweetest lady named Donna and her delicious creations are only made from the best ingredients such as real butter and cream.  When our package arrived everything was so carefully wrapped and in pretty white boxes.  We tried the following items:

Lemon Filled Cupcake

The Lemon Filled Cupcake was so moist, the lemon flavor was perfect and the frosting was so rich and satisfying.  I could have seriously eaten several of these in a row lol.  Donna uses buttermilk and butter in her special recipe.  This was my personal favorite.

Boston Cream Pie Truffles

The inside of the Boston Cream Pie Truffles was so creamy and the chocolate coating melted in my mouth.  I have never had a truffle quite like these, they were amazing.  Brides: these would be a great favor to give to your wedding guests!

Ice Cream Cookie Cones

The Gingerbread Ice Cream Cones were the kids favorite, they are so creative and tasty!  These would make for a fun party favor, each cone comes packaged in its own cellophane wrapper.  How perfect for a little gift to make someone feel special or to send to school for your child's birthday.

Gingerbread Kids

These Gingerbread Kids are soft and delicious, just the right amount of sugar and spice and so colorful.  Not just for the holidays, kids love these!  Millies Place also carries minis.

Boston Cream Pie Cupcakes

Made with real butter and buttermilk, the Boston Cream Pie Cupcakes are just what the doctor ordered lol.  The chocolate icing satisfied my chocolate craving and the creamy homemade vanilla pudding center made me want more!

Donna agreed to an interview so we can all learn a little bit more about her business, thanks Donna!  Here are her responses:

Mama-Nibbles:  What is your favorite of your handmade items and why?

Donna from Millies Place:  My favorite is usually what I just baked!  Then I have an order for something I haven't made in awhile such as the ginger cookie dough truffles and I realize that it could be one of my favorites too.  In reality, my very favorites are the ginger whoopie pies and the chocolate cookie sandwiches filled with coconut frosting and then dipped in chocolate.  Oh, and the coconut cupcakes.

Mama-Nibbles:  What inspires you?

Donna from Millies Place:  I enjoy watching the cooking channels. I watch them and say, I can make that.  Then I do and put them in my shop.

Mama-Nibbles:  What are 3 tools in your work space that you couldn't live without?

Donna from Millies Place:  One is my electric mixer.  I have burnt out 3 of them.  The 2nd would be my favorite mixing bowls.  The 3rd would be my sewing machine and serger.

Mama-Nibbles:  What do you enjoy doing when you are not baking or sewing?

Donna from Millies Place:  I enjoy my family and friends.  I especially enjoy it when I get invited over to their home and I don't have to cook!

Mama-Nibbles:  How did you come up with your store name?

Donna from Millies Place:  When I first started I wanted something that related to sewing.  But I also realized that eventually I wanted to get my license so that I could sell my baked goods.
I looked at my cat and realized that I liked her name so I decided to call my shop, "Millies Place."

Mama-Nibbles:  How did you get started in your handmade business?

Donna from Millies Place:  I have been sewing since I was in grade school when I made an apron.  I also took cooking in school.  I loved doing both.  I got a sewing machine when I was either 9 or 10. I made my prom dress and my wedding dress.
I remember baking chocolate chip cookies when I was probably 13 or 14.  My daughter told me about Etsy so I thought that I would give it a try.  I started by making grocery bag holders from vintage tablecloths and preemie baby clothes.  I also wanted to sell baked goods.  So while I was waiting to get my NH Baking License I started baking and taking pictures and writing descriptions so that I would be ready to start selling when I did receive my license.
The hardest part was figuring out how much the ingredients cost and coming up with a fair price.  It also took time to figure out the best way to package everything and where to buy the supplies.  I must say, everyone that I contacted on Etsy for information on how they package things and where to buy supplies were very helpful.  All in all, I think my shop is doing pretty good!  Recently 2 Brides ordered the Boston Cream Pie Truffles for their weddings.  One for her dessert table and the other ordered them in individual truffle boxes to give to her wedding guests.

Find Millies Place on Etsy!  Check out her other amazing goodies such as her coconut cupcakes (pictured below) and vintage goods that are for sale:

How to Get High Value Coupons for Free - Week # 4

Here are the previous weeks in case you missed out: WEEK #1 & WEEK #2 & WEEK #3

Let's fix that grocery budget!
Since January 2011 I have been writing companies compliments (some criticisms) on their products and in turn they have snail mailed or even emailed me coupons that are either higher value than your normal from the paper coupon and even some have been for completely free items.  This coming week I encourage you to take 10 minutes and email just five companies.  Results will vary greatly, some companies that have mailed me freebies have mailed other people "cents off" coupons so don't expect to receive the same results.  Since January 2011 I have gotten $542.55 worth of coupons that vary from freebies to cents off for products we love to use and all it took was 10 minutes a week.  I'd say that is definitely worth it! Just locate each website's "Contact Us" section, sometimes it can be hidden so look hard.  If you get a coupon back I'd love to hear about it so come back and comment!

What do I write?
My letters always start with a personal greeting and then I tell them my name and family size.  I like to write something personal such as a memory I associate with their product or how we use a particular item.  Another thing you will want to make mention of in your letter is how much you enjoy their product and which item is your favorite.  The next thing is to make sure you include your personal contact info if there is no form to fill out, that way they do not have to try to reply just to get that information from you.  Lastly I like to end my letter in a sincere way thanking them for their time and then it is ready to send.

This week I am going to educate you on how coupons work with info I have gathered across the web.  Next week I will resume the list.  If you are just joining this will give you a chance to get caught up.

And the winner for the Peter Rabbit Organic baby food pouches is...

Congratulations! You are the winner of 12 assorted baby food pouches from Peter Rabbit Organics!

Entry #51Maddie G.

I have emailed you and you will have 48 hrs to respond.

To everyone, thank you for entering and stay tuned for more exciting giveaways!

TruKid Natural Bodycare for Kids - Review & Giveaway ARV $24

TruKid products provide some of the best in natural based skincare for your families needs.  They have an amazing line of cruelty free body care products you can feel good about your children using.  All TruKid products and packaging are free of paba, BPA, SLS, parabens, phthalates, synthetic dyes, nano-particles, petroleums, chemicals, propylene glycol, sulfates and gluten.  The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has given TruKid's entire line of skin care products their highest safety rating!

We have used the TruKid Sunny Days Sport sunscreen every day now for a couple weeks and it is a favorite.  A little goes a long way, it has no greasy feeling and rubs in much easier than most zinc based sunscreens we have tried.  The water resistant formula definitely works very well, my children are in and out of the water constantly and this sunscreen stayed on them.  The unscented is amazing, no weird smell like you get with other kinds that claim to be unscented and so perfect for the sensitive child or adult.  Something that pleased me even more was the list of ingredients, several of which are organic.

TruKid Bubbly Body Wash is an all natural wash with the most delicious fresh citrus scent that can be used to wash the day away.  My whole family was squeaky clean after using Bubbly Wash and our sensitive skin was not left dried out in the least.  The hand pump that is included with each bottle is the perfect solution for children (like mine) who use too much body wash in the shower.  All they need are two pumps, that's it.  To make it easy for children who cannot quite read yet there is a little symbal on the front of the bottle that shows this wash is for the body.  For those with sensitive skin that love to take bubble baths, look no further!  This wash foams up wonderfully and is gentle on the eyes.  I even used this wash on my 11 month old son because it is so safe and gentle.

From now till September 15th $5.00 Flat Rate shipping is back!  Stock up on all your favorite TruKid products and pay only $5.00 USPS shipping no matter what the weight! This is available to U.S. customers only.

TruKid wants to give one of my readers a prize pack of the two products I reviewed!  One reader will win:
-8 oz bottle of TruKid Bubbly Body Wash RV $8.99
-2 oz tube of TruKid Sport Sunny Days SPF30+ Unscented Water Resistant Lotion RV $13.99
Contest open to the US & Canada.  Limit one entry per household, must be 18 or older.
The first three entry methods are mandatory .
http://mama-nibbles.blogspot.com/p/giveaway-rules.html
Please note:  In all of my giveaways there will be a few mandatory entries in order to be entered.  If someone does not enter all the mandatory entries then the rest of their entries will be void and I will remove them at the ending of the giveaway period.  Thank you.

Peanut Butter & Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rods

Oh peanut butter, how I love you and your creamy amazingness.  Last night I made peanut butter and chocolate dipped pretzel rods for my son's upcoming birthday party this weekend.  The pretzels taste amazing, I taste tested for quality control reasons only of course.  My next batch will be rolled in crushed up butterfinger and chopped candy coated chocolates!  The kids say we will call those Monster Pretzels.

What you need...
9 oz peanut butter, creamy or smooth is up to you. We prefer Jif for its extra peanutty flavor.
8 oz semi sweet chocolate chips
20 pretzel rods or so
Anything you may wish to roll them in

What to do...
First put your pretzel rods into the freezer for about 10 minutes, just to get them nice and cold to speed up the dipping process.

Second, line a couple cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Thirdly, put your peanut butter into the microwave for about 20 seconds, stir it really good and make sure it is runny.

Fourth, microwave your chocolate chips stirring every 30 seconds until they are almost melted.

Now dip and roll half of the pretzel into the peanut butter, shaking off the excess while holding the pretzel rod vertically.  (You may wish to stick the cookie sheet of rods into the freezer for 10 minutes before doing the chocolate.)  Dip into the chocolate or rather spoon the melted chocolate over the peanut butter and then shake it again while holding upright.  Set each dipped stick onto the parchment paper line sheet and place in the freezer to firm up a bit more before putting into a sealed bag.  You can keep your dipped pretzels on the counter in a sealed bag for up to a month.

*TIP- to kick the flavor up a notch add a bit of coffee granules to the melted chocolate

Peter Rabbit Organics - Review & Giveaway - Ends 8/26 @12:01 am

Peter Rabbit Organics baby food is simple, healthy and just what your baby needs to grow up strong.  Founded in 2004 this company is small and privately owned, the company is based out of London with some US offices.  Their bpa free squeezable pouches (with a no-choke cap) make eating healthy fruits and veggies so fun.  In August of 2010 Parenting magazine picked Peter Rabbit baby pouches as one of the top six kid snacks for the summer!

Peter Rabbit Organics is focused on three promises: to make everything 100% organic, 100% healthy and 100% delicious.  I was sent six pouches to review and my baby boy enjoyed every last drop.  I also tasted each one before giving them to him.  The wholesome taste was fresh, as if the fruit or veggies had just been plucked from the garden and pureed just seconds beforehand, we love that!

These are great for babies, toddlers and young children, ages 6 months and up.  Each pouch is a generous 3-4 oz portion which makes for the perfect meal or snack.  You have the option to easily reseal the pouch with the cap and put it into the refrigerator.  These are so easy to take on the go, just throw one in my purse and he has something wonderful to snack on while I am grocery shopping or running errands.  To heat up your pouch all you need is a bowl or cup full of hot water, just plop the pouch in and let it sit for a couple minutes. One pouch was enough to keep my 22 lb 11 month old satisfied for 2 1/2 hours.  I just gave him his pouch, he slurped it down and then he had a sippy of water.  For him these are a snack, for smaller babies these would definitely make for a perfectly portioned meal.

As far as people thinking that these pouches are just a trend, think again!  I think that being able to let my very independent baby squeeze his own baby food pouch into his mouth is an amazing thing.  He has not been interested in using eating utensils yet, in fact he just refuses to eat if there is a spoon involved lol.  I love that he feels like he has "won" when he gets his pouch and I don't have to compromise on anything because what he is eating is 100% good for him.  I bet these pouches would be a wonderful replacement for a lollipop or gum to keep ones ears from popping on an airplane.  You know what, these yummy pouches are even great for adults!  You could take one on a bike ride, it would be easy to eat while peddling along and give you some extra energy.  Squeezable pouches will be around for good and Peter Rabbit Organics has some of the best.

     To purchase:
You can go to the Peter Rabbit Organics website and search for a store nearest you.  Pouches are also available for purchase on Amazon.com.
Like Peter Rabbit Organics on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/PROrganics
Follow them on Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/pr_organics

Investment?
I've seen these go from $1.19 all the way to $2.99 each pouch.

Mama & Baby give Peter Rabbit Organics five out of five hearts, we love them!
...as an alternative to fresh fruits and vegetables but certainly not a replacement for fresh.  These are a perfect way to sneak fresh fruits and veggies into you child's diet.  When I’m just too exhausted to cut up a piece of fruit or cook, peel, or slice some veggies at the end of the day, it does feel good to be able to open a pouch and call it a day.
Peter Rabbit Organics would like to give one of my readers their very own box of 12 assorted pouches!

To enter just fill in the Rafflecopter form below.  Giveaway ends 8/26 @12:01am.
*I received a gift of six pouches to help facilitate my review.  I was not financially compensated for this post.  All opinions are my own.*

Quick Tip of the Week – Shinier Hair

                                      8143818-head-of-the-girl-with-long-hair-on-a-white-background
I absolutely torture my poor hair every day.  From blow drying, curling, flat iron, pony tails, baby spit up (lol) and forgetting to condition because I am always short on time.  My big secret to shiny hair?  I rinse with cold water after washing.  Basically after washing in the shower I will just tilt my head back, crank the water to freezing and give my head the shock of it’s life LOL.
WHY?
The cold water closes the hair follicle thus making it smoother and shinier.  People ask me all the time how I have such healthy looking hair and I thought it was my shampoo and conditioner until I switched brands and stopped doing my usual cold rinse.  The week that I didn’t rinse with cold was a very bad hair week indeed.  I hope this crazy tip helps your hair look shinier and if nothing else wakes you up in the shower.

Today is National Relaxation Day - Ways to Relax for Parents

Photo property of Mama-Nibbles 2011

The 24/7 stress of our daily lives can sometimes be a bit consuming.  How can we feel peace during the chaos?  Here are 7 ways that I like to relax in the midst of your crazy life.

1. Go to bed early and wake up early...if you can manage this that extra half hour of quiet solitude in the morning can really help keep that energy level up and stress down during the day.  I find it helpful to read my favorite book or sip on some coffee while listening to quiet music.

2. Do household chores in short bursts.  Throw in a load of laundry, fold a load and then sit down for a while and play with the baby for 15-20 minutes.  Empty the dishwasher, load it and then sit down again for another break.  Doing this helps to break up the day and makes those tedious jobs more relaxing.

3. Turn off the tv, the radio, your phone and anything else that makes noise.  It really does help to unplug everything for a whole day.

4. Laugh a little or a lot!  I love giggling with the kids, they really know how to be funny.  Have a quick pillow fight or run outside and jump through the sprinkler.  Who says the kids get to have all the fun!

5. Immerse yourself in the moment.  Don't worry about anything else, just focus on what you are doing at that moment.  This one can be tough but very relaxing once you master it.

6. Be outside, enjoy nature and all its beauty.  Just breathing in that fresh sunshiny air will relax me.  Taking a nice walk through the park is a great way to just relax.  So strap on the baby carrier and dust off the stroller!

7. Just let loose!  Turn on some favorite music and dance or sing around the house.  The kids will probably laugh or maybe they will join in but either way, the music will soothe your soul.

Mama's Back to School Shopping List -Week of 8/14

A lot of really awesome deals have already come and gone but here are some great ones to check out for Back-to-School.  This is just my own personal list of items I am going to look for, hope it helps someone.  I am getting extras to put in a special teacher gift pack we are making for our kids teachers.  If you can swipe some extras this is a great way to help them out!  I know my kids' teachers are always asking for paper towels and glue by the time winter hits.  Wouldn't it be nice for them not to have to ask for more items.

Shoulder Buddies Review & Giveaway Ends 12:01 am on 8/18/2011

Peace's Peaceful "Smarts" Pictured Above
Shoulder Buddies are lovable little figures that rest on your child's shoulder and stay in place to go anywhere with them.   Each figure has an embedded magnet that connects with a Magic Coin in order to stay securely on a shirt, hat, backpack, etc. They come in a variety of themes and colors – with over 30 new characters per year – so there’s a Shoulder Buddy (or two, or more) to appeal to everyone.  Every Buddy comes with its own card that teaches kids a special life lesson.  They are especially great for summer traveling, going to grandma's house and camp.
To attach, you just slide the magic coin under the shoulder of your shirt and sit your Shoulder Buddy on the outside over the coin.  Just make sure your Buddy is straight, they like to look around and see what is going on lol.  Every Shoulder buddy comes with a positive educational and character building lesson and they are so fun to collect!
My 5 and 7 year old children had a really fun time with their shoulder buddies.  The took them on the trampoline and jumped all over but the Shoulder Buddies did not budge, the magic magnet is strong!  They are even taking the to bed on their pjs at night, so cute!  Every kid in the neighborhood has been asking us where they can get their very own Shoulder Buddy.  I definitely know this is going to be a very popular little toy with the kids.  My 5 year old already has plans to take his Buddy to school on his backpack so he can show him off.  I love the positive message these little figures bring to children.  I think these will make a nice reward, birthday gift, stocking stuffer and more!

FlipFlop Wines - Review

Flipflop wines embraced the movement toward individualistic expression, instead of manufacturing wines into some cookie-cutter style that’s all the rage. Our goal is to craft expressive, well-balanced wines that evoke just what the grapes inside intended, without being over-wrought or over-explained, and that can be enjoyed at any occasion.

I have always kind of just tip-toed around wine.  I absolutely love it don't get me wrong but I seem to always pick out the worst tasting ones, pair them with the wrong foods, find myself frowning at the expensive price tag or I lose my corkscrew.  I recently was awarded the opportunity to take a few FlipFlop wines out for a test drive.  I received Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Grigio.  First of all the wines arrived very safely packaged, there was no way the bottles could get damaged during shipping and it made me feel special to know that they took such care in their packaging.  Secondly the wines come in neatly designed bottles, the graphics on the labels are very welcoming and they made me excited to try them.  Here is the best part...on the back of each bottle there is a label that tells you exactly what temperature your wine should be served, what foods it would compliment best plus what it smells and tastes like.  FlipFlop has taken wine and made it easy to be enjoyed by anyone, even the novice wine enthusiast.  You want to know, could it possibly get any better?  YES! no corkscrew will ever be needed to enjoy your FlipFlop wines!  I breathed a sigh of relief when I discovered this because I have had my fair share of losing the corkscrew and in a desperate need for a nightcap I ended up hacking the cork out of a bottle of wine with a paring knife.  The knife method took me about half an hour and then I had to strain the bits of cork out of my wine, by then I was so worked up I could not even enjoy it.  FlipFlop Wines are simple and affordable with amazing flavor, check them out below.  I can hardly wait to try the rest!

FlipFlop Riesling SRP $7- I loved this one!  This is a very food friendly wine because it could lend itself to a very large variety of cuisine.  We paired ours with spicy pork ribs and it was UH-mazing!  I also had a few sips with a ginger snap cookie, this was equally as delicious.

FlipFlop Pinot Noir SRP $7 - I made ice cream with this one and sipped on a glass while I was preparing it.  I made a plain ice cream base with a bit of extra sugar and let it cool.  Once the base was cooled I chilled it in my chiller machine and then added chocolate bits and smoked bacon, the end result was phenomenal and every bite was a bit of heaven.  I could taste the wine's spiciness, the hints of cherry and vanilla.  I absolutely enjoyed this.

FlipFlop Pinot Grigio SRP $7 - We had this one along with some homemade creamy, white chicken lasagna.  On the bottle this wine's description is "zesty" and it is just that, perfectly zesty and crisp.  The wine seemed to take on a whole new level of flavor as we sipped it along with our meal. I noted hints of almond and honeydew melon.  "Real Simple" magazine just selected flipflop Pinot Grigio as one of 10 summer whites and roses!

FlipFlop Gives Back:
FlipFlop Wines does something amazing, for every bottle you purchase they donate a pair of shoes to someone in need.  For many people in developing areas of the world, a pair of shoes is a rarity.  For children, some schools require shoes as a part of the uniform so some children cannot attend simply because they cannot afford shoes.

Different kinds of flipflop wines you should try:
White wines:
Chardonnay
Riesling
Pinot Grigio
Moscato -

Red wines:
Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot
Pinot Noir
