Clam on the Half Shell Day Today March 31st

Yum!  Today is national Clam on the Half Shell Day and what a yummy day indeed if you are a seafood lover like me.  Here is a recipe that is sure to knock your socks off.  Bacon and clams together are a marriage made in heaven.  Accredited online culinary colleges also suggest clams on the half shell recipe with champagne-caviar mignonette.

4 oz. bacon (8 strips), finely diced
6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 tsp red-pepper flakes
2 Tbsp olive oil
3 Tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves
Freshly ground black pepper and a bit of salt
36 little-neck clams, scrubbed

1.
Heat grill to medium.

2. Place a medium sauté pan on the grill, add the bacon, and cook until golden brown, 5 to 6 minutes. Add the garlic and red-pepper flakes and cook for one minute longer. Remove from heat and stir in the olive oil and parsley; season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. Increase grill heat to high. Place the clams directly on the grill grates, close the cover, and cook until all of the clams have opened, discarding any that do not, 3 to 4 minutes.

4. Remove clams to a platter; top each with bacon mixture before serving.

Don't hide in your shell today. Don't clam up. Get out and celebrate this special day!

#ClaritinMoms I'm a Claritin Kids Mom Crew Member! Allergy Relief for Little Ones

I grew up with a dad who honked his nose into one of his many "hankies" umpteen times per day because he had hayfever.  As a kid I always giggled at that loud honk, even tried to do it myself because I thought it was funny.  I never knew the agony that he went through until now.
I turned 30 last fall and up until this year I have never had much of an allergy problem.  I am extra sensitive to dust and mold but really who isn't.  Well this year our spring came early and early March my home state of Michigan was seeing record high temps in the 70's and 80's!  I guess all that warm weather must have caused more plants to bloom and grow than usual because all of the sudden allergies hit me hard.  My eyes itch, my nose itches, my throat even itches and burns!  I can't go 10 minutes with sneezing myself into a fit LOL.  Thankfully a kind pharmacist at my local drug store helped me out and recommended Claritin last year and I've used it ever since.  I can go about my mommy life without the red eyes and irritating itch, I love it!  I am so thankful for some relief.
My husband and I have three children, our oldest daughter M is 8 and she has no allergy symptoms.  Our middle son L is 6 and he has shown some signs such as an itchy nose that is runny.  The youngest is our son K, he is 19 months and I am seeing allergy symptoms in him for sure.  The poor little guy walks around scratching his little nose and rubbing his eyes all day long.  I feel terrible for him, especially since I now know how he must feel.
I decided to trust the brand that I was using for myself and buy some Children's Claritin for my boys.  My 19 month old is a huge child, he was 10 lbs when he was born with a 15 1/2" head if that gives you any idea.  I called my pediatrician just to check and she gave me the go-ahead to give him the Children's Claritin since he is so big.  You should definitely check with your ped if your child is under the age of 2 if you wish to use this, they can help you out and let you know if the dosage is safe for your child.  Now my poor little guys can have some much deserved allergy free days of play in this gorgeous weather we have been having.
I am pleased to announce that I am a Children’s Claritin Mom Crew Member ambassador! This means that I will be able to share product details, news, and tell all of you the experiences and improvements I notice as my two boys and I go through one of the worst allergy seasons for our location ever.  To help you out right now, Claritin has some great coupons that you can print.  Also be sure to "like" their Facebook page so you can stay up to date on product news and allergy tips.

Disclosure: As a member of the Children’s Claritin Mom Crew, I receive product samples and promotional items to share and use as I see fit.  No monetary compensation has taken place and any opinions expressed by me are honest and reflect my actual experience.

Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Baby Toy and Teether Review

Sophie the Giraffe from Vulli was born in 1961, her success as Baby teether and toy is legendary in France. Made in the French Alps with natural rubber and non-toxic paint, Sophie Le Giraffe has been safely cuddled and chewed for nearly 50 Years!
Sophie is so soft, squishy, and lightweight which makes her easy for baby to grip onto.  When I first opened Sophie's package I thought it was very similar to a dog toy but once I read a little bit more about her I discovered that the natural rubber was actually a perfect material for a baby teether toy because it is very strong and durable.  I don't worry about my toddler chewing through her at all.  The paint has not come off at all and my guy had been chewing on her a lot as his molars come in!  Sophie also makes a really fun squeaky sound when you move her around, so much so that my little guy ends up giggling as he bounces Sophie around.
Investment is right around $17-$18 but do not let the price deter you!  I would much rather pay that amount on a teething toy that does what it is designed to do and that is safe for my baby to have in their mouth than some $4 teether that could potentially have something toxic on it.
The Sophie the Giraffe is available from Hello Baby.  Hello Baby also sells a wide range of other baby and nursery items including baby toys, nursery furniture, travel and safety products.

Tidy Tots Disposable Potty Chair Liner Review and Giveaway Ends 4/08

Introducing Tidy Tots disposable potty chair liners.  Ideal for parents with small children who are potty training.  These have a universal fit to go with almost any potty chair.  I used mine with my portable potty seat and they fit perfectly, you just smooth it on.  Along with the bags there are absorbent pads that you stick inside to absorb any liquids.  If you child only goes #1 then you can use the liner 2-3 times before tossing, the super absorbent pad can hold a lot.  When you child is finished you just pull the side ties up on the bag, twist into a knot and toss it into the garbage.  This is a great idea especially if you are a mom on the go, on a long trip or just hate dealing with dumping that potty chair cup out.  These are more sanitary than a public restroom, more hygienic at home because you don't have to constantly wash out the dirty potty cup and Tidy Tots liners are just plain simple to use.
Watch this instructional video to see how Tidy Tots liners work:

Tidy Tots can be found at:
http://stores.tidytots.com/StoreFront.bok

Investment? One box will run you $7.99.  A little pricey for me but the pros outweigh this con by a lot.  These are not a very green item but it you chose to use them only on the go I don't see the harm.

And now the giveaway!

Enter the Peeps and Company Ultimate Easter Giveaway AND How to Make the Best Easter Basket Ever!

Enter the Peeps and Company Ultimate Easter Basket Giveaway!  One lucky winner will receive $500 cash and over $500 in candy and gifts from Peeps, Hot Tamales, Mike and Ike and Goldenberg's Peanut Chews!  You can enter on the Peeps and Company Facebook page under their Easter Sweepstakes tab or just click HERE to be taken directly to it. Be sure to read their terms and conditions!
Peeps and Company was very generous in sending me some really fun items so I could show you a quick way to make a gorgeous Easter basket.  I also got to try their dark chocolate dipped chocolate mousse flavored peeps.  Don't leave me in a room with those!  I tried one and soon a whole three pack disappeared, they are WAY delicious.  The chocolate flavor of the marshmallow is so smooth and then dark chocolate it is dipped in just melts in your mouth.  If you are a chocolate lover you need to pick some up, you will thank me.  To me, they are the more "adult" Peeps in the Peep family.  I can imagine topping a big mocha cake with some, it would be so pretty.  Okay...so on to my beautiful Easter basket.
The items contained in this basket are:
PEEPS® BUNNIES GLITTER STICKERS:

 Product ID: 8895547392

The butterfly cookie, basket, purple paper grass and pinwheels are from the Dollar Tree.  I used a floral foam block hot glued to the bottom inside of my basket and then surrounded that with some polished stones to weight it down but you could certainly use a bag of jelly beans to help make it heavier.  Chop sticks (because they have dull ends that cannot hurt a smaller child) and hot glue make for a great way to display everything.  I also used clear packing tape to help hold the sticks onto my items since it is invisible and added some needed support.  Once I have all my items stuck to my chop sticks I just simply stuck into the foam then filled in the base with the paper grass and there you have it!  It was so simple, minus the burning my fingers with hot glue LOL.  Have fun with this!  Making the basket up myself makes it seem more special and I can't wait to give it to my daughter.

Lisa Loeb Interview - Crayola Inside the Crayon Box

Crayola recently hosted an “Inside the Crayon Box” live chat interview with Lisa Loeb.  If you missed it you can watch the video below:
After the live chat a few bloggers including myself were contacted and asked if we wanted to have Lisa answer a few interview questions.  I was so nervous to ask her anything because I am a fan and didn't even know where to start but I came up with a few questions about her creativity:

Heidi: What is your favorite song to belt out at in the shower/in the car/for karaoke? Do you ever catch yourself singing a silly song you wrote in your head?

Lisa: Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" is one I've always loved singing when it comes on the radio.  I don't do as much karaoke as I should. : ) When I catch myself singing a silly song in my head, it's just considered songwriting, and I try to record my ideas into a phone or write it down for another time I can sit down and finish the song to share with others.

Heidi: What is your inspiration for writing your children's songs?

Lisa: I started writing children's songs because I had an opportunity to make an album that was different from the grownup albums and songs I've written since I was a teenager. I was specifically inspired by "Free to Be You and Me" and "Really Rosie," two albums made up of songs that tell stories, and also generally sound like grownup music with themes and lyrics but are a little more appropriate for kids.

Heidi: Where do you draw (creative) inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about the process?

Lisa: Creative inspiration is often fired up with coffee in the morning, and then ideas come from a number of places, and most times it's just a melody or phrase in my head.  When I collaborate, it's often more of a plan, like when I write with Michelle Lewis and Dan Petty. When we came up with the ideas for the Silly Songs sing-along book, and my Camp Lisa album. We thought about themes we wanted to cover, like trying to write a song about an inanimate item of food and it's adventures, inspired by "On Top of Spaghetti," and we came up with "The Disappointing Pancake," which also had the added bonus of having an inspiring message: you might not be great at what think your primary purpose in life might be, but in the end, you'll find you might have a lot of other great qualities and purpose in life. Other themes for the Camp record included waking up at camp, "Wake Up," saying goodbye at camp, "It's not Goodbye," and "Going Away," a fun song that includes the long list of everything you think you need at sleep away camp, and more. With the Silly Song Sing-along, we also included a song about having a cold and others not understanding what you're saying, "A Co Di By Dose," and "Opposite Day," which is pretty self-explanatory.

My favorite part of the process of writing is realizing I have an idea and then realizing when the song is coming together. Ooh, when the song is finished it's also great!  It's just the middle part in which the ideas might not be flowing as quickly, or the puzzle of connecting the ideas with music and lyrics are moving slowly that are not as fun.

Heidi: Do you ever get nervous when you have to perform?

Lisa: I always get a little nervous when I perform. I want to do a good job, and there are just some butterflies in my stomach reminding me that there's an audience out there! Once I'm on stage, I'm always fine.

Heidi: What’s your favorite (creative) thing to do when you aren’t writing/producing/playing etc?

Lisa: Some of my favorite creative things to do are coloring or painting with my daughter, doodling on my own with sparkly markers, doing crossword puzzles, and free writing. Although I haven't had as much free time lately with so many projects in progress, a two year old daughter, and being pregnant and getting ready for our second child, due in June.

Check out Lisa’s book Lisa Loeb’s Silly Sing-Along: The Disappointing Pancake and Other Zany Songs (Sterling Children’s Books, 2011) available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com. Sing, laugh, and play with pop Lisa in this fabulous collection of ten of the silliest songs ever. Fun activities, games, and recipes accompany whimsical songs. Tookies - Sponsor Spotlight for Spring Buzz Giveaway Hop

Tookies is an Etsy shop that makes gourmet sweets and treats that are as pretty as they are delicious.  I have highlighted them as a sponsor before and I just love Tookies!  You can find my other review with interview by clicking <<HERE>>.
The items we tried this time are perfect for Easter which falls on April 8th this year.  These items would make perfect gifts.  We sampled the following:
Cream of the Crop Carrot & Buttercreme Frosting Jar Cake
A spiced carrot cake layered with a creamy unique tasting buttercreme frosting.  This cake was very moist and had a very nice level of spices added to it to compliment the carrot flavor.  The frosting is so unique to me, it has an almost cream cheese flavor to it with a hint of vanilla.  Jar cakes are so fun and special, ready to eat...really quite an experience.
Gourmet Jumbo Mightie Monkie Marshmallows
First of all, Tookies marshmallows are a meal!  One marshmallow is so huge, you can barely open your mouth wide enough LOL.  This marshmallow is banana flavored and filled with chocolate chunks plus pecan bits.  The banana flavor is amazing, it is sweet but not too sweet and all those chocolate chunks melt in your mouth.  There is more chocolate on top, chopped pecan bits, coconut and then the best part...crunchy sugar!  The granules are large and they add the perfect contrast of crunchy to the soft mallow.  We have declared this our most favorite marshmallow of all.
Sweet Sugarpies Buttercreme Cookie-wiches
These are so pretty!  The cookies arrived to me in a pretty box all individually wrapped along with a slice of bread to help keep them moist.  The buttercreme came in its own little container so that I could spread each one with as much of it as I pleased and boy did we pile the buttercreme on thick!  I stuck mine into the fridge for an hour before we consumed them, it makes the frosting thicker and easier to work with.  The cookies were so soft and smelled like sugary butter or was it buttery sugar....mmmmbutter.  Tookies uses their own special french vanilla cookie recipe.  These are so stinkin' good!  You really just have to order some and try them yourself, it's almost too hard to put into words.
My kiddos enjoying a very sweet little picnic with me outside on a warm spring day.

Now go get you some Tookies! *be sure to check their shop banner for a coupon code*

BONUS ENTRY WORD: SUGAR

**Tookies will be one of my sponsors in the Spring Buzz Giveaway Event beginning on March 22nd.  Stop back on Mama-Nibbles to see what prizes we have in store for you.  There will be a bonus surprise entry just for Tookies!  It will be fun!

Disclaimer: Tookies provided me with the items I have reviewed for free only to help facilitate my review.  Getting these items for free in no way made me write a positive review, they are just that GOOD!  All opinions are my own.

Your Own Home Store has been doing a Survival Kit Series every week since 9/30/11 and there will be 26 weeks total but then once the series finishes Misty will start over again.  Each week she gives you tips and ideas on how to make your own 72 hour kit or bug-out bag.  You can find each week laid out right here: http://www.yourownhomestore.com/2011/09/survival-kit-ideas-week-by-week/  I have found it to be extremely helpful because there are so many things that we may not even think of.  You can also comment on each post or just read the comments if you don't wish to participate, there are a lot of tips from other readers that are useful as well.  There is also a fun bonus for participation and that is that you can win some FREE products from Shelf Reliance!  Each week Misty chooses a random commenter to win their choice of one item:
  1. A 55 gallon water barrel,
  2. A Katadyn Hiker Pro Microfilter, or
  3. A Featherlite zero degree sleeping bag
  4. A $70 credit to purchase any emergency supplies you want from Shelf Reliance

Want to guarantee winning one of the above?
Since building a survival kit is important, Misty wants to help make it easier for as many people as possible.  Anyone who tells others about this week by week survival kit series in at least 100 ways during the first 6 months of the series will receive their choice of the above.  You can share it:
  • on facebook (each post counts as one entry, so post often!),
  • on twitter (each tweet counts as one entry),
  • on pinterest (each pin counts as one entry)
  • by phone (each phone call counts as one entry),
  • by email (each person you email counts as one entry), or

A form is available on each week's post for you to fill out and let Misty know just how many "shares" you have done.  Once you reach 50 she will contact you.  I myself have shared 100 times now and have loved the products I got to choose!  One product we chose was the yogurt bites, the flavor I picked was the pomegranate.  My kids ate those for snacks, I'd just toss with a handful of pretzels or raisins into a baggie and they had a nutritious trail mix snack.  Here you see them in the photo below just after I opened the brand new can.  These can also be mixed with water but we liked them dry much better.  The flavor is slightly tart but definitely sweet.  My children enjoyed them plain but I could not take the sweetness so I always mixed them with things.
When we compared this 10# can containing 0.95 lbs or 39 servings (more like 60 servings when eaten dry and $34.49 on sale right now) to a similar item which only comes in a 1 oz bag with 4 servings (really more like 3 with a big toddler and at an average of $4 a bag) we found that the Thrive Foods can was a much better value!  If you do not open your other cans they will last up to 25 years!  If you do open them then they last for up to a year.  On our other yogurt bites brand it says they need to be eaten within 1 week.  The shelf life for Thrive Foods is outstanding and that is something I value.  Also, take at look at Thrive Foods Yogurt Bites natural list of ingredients:

INGREDIENTS: SUGAR, SKIM MILK YOGURT, POMEGRANATE JUICE CONCENTRATE, YOGURT POWDER, STARCH (TAPIOCA), BLACK CARROT JUICE CONCENTRATE, AND NATURAL FLAVOR. *CONTAINS: MILK.
We really have enjoyed using Shelf Reliance products and I definitely recommend the yogurt bites, they do come in other flavors and you can find them all on the website: http://yourownhomestore.shelfreliance.com/home
